READ: John 13
MY VERSE: John 13:14-17 – “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”
MY REFLECTION: Jesus was a great teacher and leader. Look at the way he teaches us to serve and leads us toward service:
- First, Jesus goes first as a leader; “I have set you an example…” He models a phrase that I use a lot, “speed of the leader, speed of the team.”
- Second, He offers a clear challenge by telling us exactly what to do – serve! He says, “…you should do as I have done for you.”
- And lastly He reinforces it by reminding us that if we do what he says there is something in it for us – “you will be blessed.”
It all comes down to something pretty simple but challenging: Jesus-style serving. If the church can get this one right…everything that God wants to happen through the church will happen. If I can get this right…everything that God wants to happen through my life will happen. OK, today I focus on Jesus-style serving.
MY PRAYER: Father God, I ask that you help me to focus not so much on what I can get out of a situation, but what I can give to a situation. I ask that Your Spirit prompt me today in an unusual way by showing me opportunities to serve and give. Thank you for being the kind of God who not only challenges us to make a difference in our world through serving, but also creates a relational economy that brings a blessing back to us through service. With love and loyalty, Dave.
